Islam and al-Andalus

octubre 8, 2014

The Middle Ages is a historical period that began with the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century and ended with the start of the Modern Age in the 15th century. In the 7th century, a new religion called Islam appeared in Arabia. It quicky expanded to the Mediterranean coast and then into Asia and Africa. A new Muslim civilisation developed. Islam, like Judaism and Crhistianity, is a monotheistic religion that believes in one God. The Prophet Muhammad preached this religion since 622 in Arabia.

The Koran is the sacred book of Islam. It contains the ideas that Allah revealed to Muhammad. In fact, Islamic society, economics and politics are based on the Koran and traditions. In these videos, you could understand several habits and beliefs from the Muslim religion and lifestyle.

The Muslims arrived on the Iberian Peninsula in 711. They defeated the Visigoth kingdom and created the Islamic state, al-Andalus. The Muslims stayed on the Peninsula until 1492. We can see Muslims influences in our culure, art, customs and language.

Finally, you can link the medieval Muslim heritage with political issues that actually affect our world. Currently, you can learn a lot about Islamic states with the next sheet:  2esoIslamic_state.
